The old bearded man is a symbol for longevity, renewal and peace, and surrounding him are gathered the other five symbols for long life : the tree that bears peaches – the fruit of eternal life imbued with medicinal properties, the conch-shaped immutable rock, the stream which springs forth the nectar of immortality, a pair of birds that symbolize constancy and fidelity, and a deer – the only animal that can find the plant of immortality is an auspicious symbol of tranquility, non-violence and particularly of renunciation. This tale appears more as a secular than religious motif in Tibetan art.
